Just the Right Spot*: Compassionate Collaboration to Bring Housing and Hope to Greensboro’s Homeless
Featuring:
Cara Michele Forrest & Beth McKee-Huger
Friday, November 4, 2005
8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Greensboro Chamber of Commerce – Wachovia Boardroom
Using lessons from Hurricane Katrina, and building upon the grassroots leadership already in Greensboro, this presentation reflects on the cost of homelessness, the benefits of affordable housing, and the creative options to take care of all of our community's poor. Reactive strategies to homelessness often cost a community more than proactive measures to support those who lack jobs, need drug and alcohol addiction services, require intervention in domestic abuse, and/or seek mental heath assistance. Our speakers will shed light on the work being done in Greensboro to alleviate suffering for all, and the role the business community can play to hasten the progress. Speaking for those who often are not in a position to advocate for themselves, our guest speakers will reveal the methods, aims, opportunities and obstacles of ordinary citizens trying to climb out of poverty against multiple currents.
* “Spot” – What our friends on the street call the place they sleep. Help us make their “spots” safe affordable housing!
